The Battle for Egypt's Past

Author Paul Sussman worked as a field archaeologist in Egypt for many years. His new novel, "The Hidden Oasis," is published by Bantam Press.

It sounds petty to say it given that over a hundred people have now lost their lives, but amid the seismic events currently engulfing Egypt, the thing that has most saddened and upset me has been the damage done to the country's uniquely rich cultural heritage.
I worked in Egypt for many years as a field archaeologist, and the news of widespread looting and destruction has been utterly heartbreaking.
So far, fortunately, the damage has not been anything like as severe or extensive as that witnessed in Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
That damage has, and continues to be done, however, is beyond question. On the night of Friday, January 28, looters broke into the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo and vandalized some of its most precious artifacts (including objects from the Tutankhamen collection). Elsewhere -- at Saqqara, Abu Sir, Qantara to name but a few -- ancient monuments have been damaged, museums broken into and archaeological storage magazines ransacked.
Nor is it simply ancient remains that have been targeted. In Cairo, the city's Coptic Museum and the early 20th century El-Manial Palace have both suffered looting.
As Zahi Hawass, head of the country's Supreme Council of Antiquities, says on his website: "My heart is broken and my blood is boiling."
On one level, of course, the loss of a few objects, when set against so many deaths and injuries, is wholly irrelevant.
Even before the current upheavals, the preservation of historical remains featured low on the list of priorities of a majority of Egyptians, for whom simply getting food on the table is a daily struggle.
On another level, however, the damage to its cultural remains strikes at the very heart of the Egyptian identity.
In Egypt, history matters. This is a country that for 3,000 years under the pharaohs was one of the world's predominant superpowers. It played a crucial role in the development of early Christianity (it was the birthplace of the monastic tradition) and was the political center of the Muslim world under the Fatimid and, later, the Mameluk dynasties. In modern times, under Gamal Abdel Nasser, it was at the forefront of the Arab Nationalist movement.
For every Egyptian I have ever met, this history is a source of immense pride. It is hard-wired into their cultural conscious, is intricately bound up with their sense of self. Not simply because history brings tourists and tourists bring money (11 percent of Egyptian GDP comes from tourism), but because in a country where poverty, lack of opportunity and repression are the norm, the glories of the past offer a form of empowerment in the present.
There is a telling, and wonderful story of Tutankhamen's body being returned to his tomb in Luxor after a period being studied in Cairo. As the boat carrying the body moved along the Nile, fellaheen women lined the river's banks ululating in honor of the dead king. For them, this was not some distant, meaningless figure, but rather one of their own.
Egyptians feel a personal connection with their past. It shouldn't be over-sentimentalized, and during my years working there I encountered numerous instances of friction -- often violent friction - between the Antiquities authorities and the interests of local people. Appreciation of one's national heritage tends to diminish when your house is being knocked down because it happen to be built over some Old Kingdom remains.
That said, a vast majority of Egyptians have been deeply shocked by the current looting and destruction. It is as if their own property has been attacked. Across the country, in the absence of police protection, they have mobilized to defend their monuments. In Cairo, hundreds of people linked arms around the museum to protect it; on the West Banks of the Nile in Luxor citizen's groups have banded together to guard the tombs and temples.
What they are defending is not so much a few dusty old objects as the very idea of what it is to be Egyptian.
If I am saddened that so many objects seem to have been trashed and stolen, I am at the same time deeply heartened that so many ordinary people have demonstrated how much their heritage means to them, and that in the midst of a struggle for their country's future, they are at the same time looking out for its past.

MTV N Nigerian Music Stars Encourage Young Nigerians To Vote N Launches “Choose or Lose” Campaign For 1st Time In Africa

PRESS RELEASE
MTV has launched its first ever pro-democracy campaign in Africa ahead of the upcoming Nigerian elections.

Starting January 2011, the network’s global “Choose or Lose” voter mobilization campaign will be encouraging and empowering young Nigerians to exercise their right to vote.
To maximise youth voter registration for the April 2011 elections, MTV will use its appeal to launch a series of on-air promotional spots on African music channel MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and on the MTV Base blocks on Nigerian terrestrial TV partners STV and AIT.  The promos urge Nigerian youth to determine their future and register before 29 January to ensure Nigeria’s largest ever youth voter turnout.

A key component of the initiative will include the release of a special music video fronted by Nigerian contemporary musicians entitled “Rep 4 Naija”.  The track, an upbeat hip hop/R&B number is a collaboration between Nigerian stars eLDeeSound SultanBlack TwangNaeto C, MeakuD’Banj and M.I. The video for Rep 4 Naija was directed by top Nigerian video director Clarence Peters.

MTV’s Choose or Lose campaign was designed to inform and empower young voters on the political issues that matter to them most, and to provide a platform for airing their views. First launched in 1992, the campaign has helped fuel several of the largest youth voter turnouts in US history, including in 2004, when it helped inspire nearly 22 million 18-30 year olds to register and vote. The campaign has successfully engaged youth voters in many other countries around the world including Mexico’s 2006 Presidential election.

Choose or Lose” is part of MTVNA’s on-going social responsibility campaign that has spawned initiatives such as “MTV Base Meets” – a platform where young people are given the opportunity to interact directly with politicians and get involved.
Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa,......“With a huge percentage of the Nigerian population under the age of 24, “Choose or Lose” is designed to remind young people that they should take their civic responsibilities seriously and play a part in determining who should lead them.  For Africa to develop, its young people need to secure a future that enables them to achieve their goals and that can only happen with good leadership.

Nigeria’s independent national electoral commission (INEC) has confirmed that elections, which were initially scheduled for the end of January 2011, are now set for April.  The elections for the National Assembly will be held on 2 April, for the Presidency on 9 April and for the governors and state assemblies on 16 April.

EX SUPER EAGLES STAR UCHE OKAFOR WAS MURDERED!

UCHE OKAFOR

Uche was found hanging at his Dallas, Texas home earlier this month and a preliminary report by the Dallas police ruled that the easy-going defender hanged himself. But his family, friends and the Nigerian community in America rejected the suicide claims as they suspected foul play.
The FBI stepped into the controversy last week after protests from the family members who even alleged racism for the shoddy investigation over the death of the player. And the latest  findings have confirmed the suspicion of murder held by many of the former Eagles’  admirers. The FBI report however, did not state who killed Uche Okafor or why his life was terminated.
This piece of information from the USA, will interest the Nigerian government. The foreign affairs Minister, Odein Ajumogobia declared only on Monday that Nigeria was awaiting the result of the FBI report, before the country could take necessary action.
A source close to the family disclosed that the latest twist in the death of the player was quite a relief to his tribesmen who are holding on to an ancient myth that it was a taboo for an Ibo man to take his own life.
Uche Okafor’s Eagles colleagues and indeed Nigerians also struggled to come to terms with the death of the player who was comfortably living with his wife and daughter. He was into business and also into football commentary with ESPN sports.
It was gathered that the corpse of the departed player will be flown in for burial next month.

CYKOLOGY (9ja's HOT WIZ KID PRODUCER EXTRA ORDINARY)

Born Ihuoma Abanuwa this Abia multi talented artiste/producer has worked with more big-wigs in the Nigerian Music Industry than his peers could even ever boast of seeing face to face.
He started as a rapper in 2006 but fate brought him in contact through his producer cousin Jay Stunt with Big Lo from whence his future in music turned for the better. He metamorphosed to a wonderful singer and also honed his skills as a producer which has seen him produce such songs as This Na Naija (Big Lo & 2Shotz, Tuaile (KZ Johnson original version), Anyhow (Big Lo ft Abounce & Toscar), Nwanyi Oma (Kage ft Toscar & Queenzy). He also featured on Naira Note (2Shotz Music Business Album) as a rapper, Hustler (Big Lo & W4), In This Life (Big Lo).
He debuted with his own lyrical tracks Paparazzi, Automatic, Cyko Dey Go and Champagne Popper.
Paparazzi earned him alias Mr. Paparazzi which is a popular tune among most Nigerian undergraduates.
Still working on his sophomore album CYKOLOGY, this young dude believes his best is yet to come.

Ogbuefi 1 of Hip Hop BIG LO

Born Lotanna Udezue, BIG LO started music at a tender age under the tutelage of his parents who saw to it that a growing child should be complete in terms of extra curricula activities.

This graduate of Bio Chemistry from the prestigious University of Nigeria Nsukka in Enugu State broke into limelight in 2004 with the mammoth hit “Delicious” from his debut album wherein he featured 2shotz. Although the track received great airplay across the country and got him a Hip Hop World Award for Best Rapper, the chubby rapper however went AWOL after the early buzz died.

With the Nigerian mainstream music now getting international recognition, the rapper **** producer is oiling his gears for his sophomore album. His forthcoming album titled “Money Identity” got Nigerian Musical Talents like Ruggedman, Durella, Styl-Plus, 2Shotz, W4, Abounce, Toscar and the mega talented voice from the East, Flavour N'Abania who was on the ‘Osondi Owendi’ remake with MC Loph.

This much waited album is believed to be an evolutionary step towards standing this Anambra State born Multi-Talented Artiste who is also an entertainment producer of repute out of the crowd as a force to reckon with.
In his words, 'I have discovered that music nowadays is really nothing; most of them are just like empty shells, it’s all plastic. Even the ones that [receive] airplay don’t last for long because they are too commercialized and sound a lot like jingles. So the major theme of my album will be to show myself to the public as the real Big Lo. On my first album, I was kind of in a hurry to blow so I gave a lot of tracks that bent to popular wishes, but this one will be more about me in ways that my fans have not really experienced. The album will show a new me that is different from the funny guy that just does funny raps about chicks. I’m an Ibo man as well as a cultural and educated person so I want the album to showcase all these parts of me. Of course I’ll be talking about girls but there will be other topics besides that. I own a recording studio, my own production company with managers, which is very similar to what most record labels offer you. What most labels do is provide money to produce the songs but in terms of expertise and areas of management, promotions and publicizing, they lack, which is the reason most artists come out independently and still score a hit"

Having produced such mega radio hits like Bigz Girls which is a remake of Eldee’s Big Boy for a group protégé of his – Gbogbo Bigz Girlz (Kiss & Sheeba); little or nothing is left to doubt that Big Lo is set to take the Nigerian Entertainment industry by storm and re-emphasis the popular saying that Rome was not built in a day.

The much awaited album has songs like Money Identity ft Flavour N'Abania , Hustler ft W4 & Cyko Kid and Anyhow ft Abounce & Toscar.

DEMMAMA SOLDIERS

Ruggedman Takes Gbenga Adeyinka To Beg General for Infringement

Ruggedman got into serious copyright infringement trouble sampling a juju track from veteran General Prince Adekunle in his ‘diss’ song targeted at 9ice, the track titled “a word is enough for the 9ice”. Days after the track release, reports of a law suit for copyright infringement emerged.
General Prince Adekunle – According to Wikipedia, is of Egba origin, from Abeokuta in Ogun State. Prince Adekunle has been a major innovator and force in the jùjú music scene, with his distinctive driving Afrobeat style. Famous musicians such as Sir Shina Peters and Segun Adewale started their careers playing with his band, the Western Brothers.[1] Although he toured in England in the early 1970s, he did not become well known outside Nigeria.
Ruggedman sampled his music without consent and after reports of litigation reached him, he went in search of the juju proponent, Toscantainment gathers. He got the General’s phone number through his son via Facebook but before then he had called the number of his CD jacket and it turned out to be his marketer’s contact (not management). On receipt of phone number, his manager got across to the General and a meeting was fixed.
On the day agreed for the first meeting, the General wasn’t picking his calls so it didn’t happen. Afterwards, another meeting was rescheduled and this time, the rapper went with an older colleague and comedian Gbenga Adeyinka. The general resides in Ketu and on the sight of the comedian, there was shouting from the woman who recognized him. Ruggedman and Comedian Gbenga Adeyinka met the juju artiste in his living room, in the company of a friend. Gbenga Adeyinka did most of the talking – acknowledged Ruggedman had offended the General and they came to ask for forgiveness.
The general confirmed the intention to sue Ruggedman but The General ended up praying for the rapper and his company.

GBOGBO BIGZ GIRLZ ARE BACK WITH A BANGER!!!

For The Bigz Galz music has been a predominant lifestyle. One which saw them starting out as hard core female rappers before delving into more mainstream genre of music. Born Rachel Onyinye Ferguson (Kiss) & Chioma Ochomma (Sheeba) both from Abia State. The Bigz Galz came into lime light with a rendition of a female version remix of Eldee‘s popular song Big Boy in 2009. The song which was produced by iconic artiste/producer Big Lo saw the girls stealing the hearts of female followers across the country a feat that brought some kind of rancour between them and Eldee.
Despite the slow pace of events occasioned by the controversy, the Bigz Galz held sway & stole many shows where they performed at notable amongst being the Kennis Music Easter Fiesta 2009. They somewhat went underground to intensify their efforts in cooking up hot tracks which brought about such sensational repertoires like Me I Like You, Baby Mama & One Mic.
Listen to Me I Like You which is gradually warming its way into the hearts of their fans. It was produced by E Twins who are protegees of Big Lo, and it offers a blend of contemporary Hip Hop & Afro Hip Hop. Enjoy.

The Ogbuefi 1 of Hip Hop Big Lo a.k.a Isi Gini Bebe has dropped yet another Hot and Sizzling Brand New Single titled "ANYHOW" ft ABOUNCE & TOSCAR...it's a re-visit of the popular Delicious mammoth track that made him popular as it comtains bits of comical and funny quibs and lyrical lines that were deliciously and expertly delivered by the Veteran and The Pioneer of the genre known today in Nigeria as"Ibo Rap". Also complimenting on his efforts is another Veteran of the Nigerian Rap scene "ABOUNCE who dished very witty but intriguing lyrical lines accented with the funny Calabar tone made popular by the likes of James Iroha (Gringory of the popular sit-com of the early eighties The New Masquerade) while the chorus was taken by the comical TOSCAR who delivered a funny tone filled with a drunken stupor....infact it is a must listen.
