After a four-year break from the big screen, Will Smith once again puts on his crown as the Fresh Prince of the box office. Men in Black 3, the first installment of the hit franchise to come around in 10 years, was able to do what Battleship and Dark Shadows couldn't: take The Avengers out of the No. 1 spot.
The sci-fi comedy, which follows Smith back in time to meet a young Tommy Lee Jones (played by Josh Brolin), grossed $70 million at the box office. Slightly less than expected, but still comfortably above The Avengers' second place $37 million take. MiB 3 also took in $133 million overseas, but it still has a long way to go before it's in the, um, black. The Hollywood Reporter
estimates that, between a $230 million production budget and huge
marketing spend, the film will have to clear $500 million before Sony
Pictures can consider it profitable.
Battleship held on to No. 3 with $10.8 million while Think Like a Man stayed in the top ten with $1.4 million in ticket sales, bringing it's grand total to $88.4 million since release.
Next week, Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart bring their Snow White and the Huntsmen to the yard. Will they be able to snatch the crown from MiB 3?
