Nigeria Under 17 team the Golden Eaglets today
defeated their counterparts Mexico to clinch the coveted trophy in the FIFA
Under 17 World which held in United Arab Emirates Football Cathedral – the
Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The Eaglets took the lead after an own goal by
Mexican player Erick Aguirre which was occasioned by Eaglets striker Musa Yahaya.
The match ended 1 – 0 in the first half with many chances missed by the Golden
Eaglets who stood out and domineering over their Mexican counterparts.
The second half saw the Eaglets still mount a lot of
pressure resulting in two more goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and captain Musa Muhammed
respectively to make the Golden Eaglets the first team to have won the trophy
four times.
In the stands was a one-time Golden Eaglets player
in 1993 Kanu Nwankwo who came to cheer his home team to glory.
Nigeria sets the record for the most goals scored in
the U-17 World Cup tournament with 26 goals beating Germany who scored 24 goals
in the last tournament. They were coached by Manu Garba who also won same trophy as a player in his days.
