2011 BET AWARDS WINNERS

The 2011 BET Awards was broadcasted live on Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with performances by Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne and other top performers.

The show didn't quite reach the water-cooler value of last year's ceremony, when Brown cried on stage while singing Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." Brown attended this year's ceremony, performed and went home with a good share of awards (Four).
He had a mildly awkward moment when a presenter named Rihanna and Drake winners of an award that actually went to Brown.
Other than that, the night was entertaining, thanks to a long lineup of performers. Kevin Hart did a pretty good job hosting. Here's a recap of the show.

Click here for a full roundup of winners.
***
8 p.m. - Mary J. Blige opens the show. Anita Baker makes an appearance on stage. I love you, ladies! Settle for nothing less than real love!
8:07 - Host Kevin Hart takes the stage with a pretty intense step routine. His backup dancers? A bunch of cute kids. I'm impressed.
8:10 - Opening monologue from Kevin Hart. "Nobody's safe tonight," he says. He's all about honesty, poking fun at Jamie Foxx for getting in a fight at an Usher concert. He says it's time for Puffy -- er, Diddy, or whatever -- to be "grown." I agree. You get to a certain point in life when you're only allowed one name.
8:15 - Best Male R&B Artist goes to Chris Brown. I sense some Breezy domination on the horizon. "All my fans are everything to me," he says.
8:23 - Well hello, Rick Ross. He performs "Aston Martin Music," and then is joined by Lil Wayne, Ace Hood and DJ Khaled for "Hustle Hard." I'm not sure it was the best idea for Rick Ross to expose his stomach. It's a little, um, intense.
8:29 - Malcolm-Jamal Warner has a new show! Woo hoo!
8:30 - Best Young Star is a tie between Jaden and Willow Smith. They kind of HAD to do that, right? In the name of avoiding sibling rivalries?
8:35 - I spy Justin Bieber in the audience.
8:36 - Host Kevin Hart pokes fun at Rick Ross' bare chest. He says Rick needs a fourth bra. Funny but true.
8:37 - Hart introduces a fake reality show, "The Real Husbands of Hollywood." Nick Cannon makes an appearance in the pre-filmed clip. I want this show to really happen.
8:40 - Best Female Hip-Hop Artist is Nicki Minaj. Her hair actually looks somewhat normal tonight. I wanted a green wig. "I love my team," she says. She brings a full entourage on stage with her, including Lil Wayne and Drake.
8:45 - Jill Scott performs "Rolling Hills." The stage is set up like a really cool jazz club. She has a little dramatic exchange with Idris Elba. I'm loving the whole theater thing.
8:52 - Is there really an "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man" movie?
8:54 - Woo hoo! Come on, I know you love "The Five Heartbeats," too. Great performance.
8:56 - Best Group is Diddy Dirty Money.
8:58 - Tonight's show will feature some emerging artists. First up: Mali Music, from Savannah, Ga.
9:04 - Chris Brown performs! He starts off with "She Ain't You." Um, what's up with his pants? I get my answer when he removes his first getup -- a suit -- to perform "Look at Me Now." The censors stay very busy. Hello, Busta! After that brief interlude, Breezy goes into a major dance sequence. No crying this year, but he definitely knows how to take command of the stage.
9:12 - Best Collaboration is Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes for "Look at Me Now." Best acceptance line from Chris Brown: "Public speaking is not my strong suit."
9:18 - Alicia Keys debuts a new song, "Typewriter." I'm a little leery of the new track, but I'm totally digging the Alicia Keys/Bruno Mars duet to "A Woman's Worth." Then Rick Ross is suddenly on stage. Before I can even analyze his random appearance, Alicia Keys busts out some "Fallin.'" I assume I'm not the only one singing along at home.
9:25 - Nicki Minaj represents Team Barbie, Justin Bieber represents Team Bieber. Don't ask.
9:27 - Best Male Hip-Hop Artist is Kanye West. He couldn't make it to the show.
9:32 - Time to recognize some everyday heroes. No, Rick Ross is not among the honorees.
9:34 - Time for a performance by Big Sean and...Chris Brown. They sing "My Last."
9:38 - Another emerging artist: Kimberly Nichole
9:45 - Cherelle and Alexander O'Neal perform "Saturday Love." Story of my life.
9:48 - Best New Artist is Wiz Khalifa. He thanks all the young people who "promote positivity."
9:54 - Trey Songz performs "Love Faces." Hmm. Let's just say his bare chest looks a lot different from what Rick Ross brought to the stage a little earlier. Then, he goes into "The Usual." Then, Kelly Rowland sings "Motivation." She does a great job. Probably my favorite performance of the night so far.
10:01 - Time to thank the U.S. military.
10:02 - Steve Harvey gets a humanitarian award. "Without God, I would be nothing," he says.
10:12 - Al Sharpton is in the house!
10:14 - Time for some gospel music. Praise the Lord.
10:19 - Best Gospel Album goes to Mary Mary.
10:25 - Patti LaBelle gets the Lifetime Achievement Award. I really, really, really want to hear "New Attitude" right now. Anyone agree? Instead, I get Cee Lo singing "Somebody Loves You Baby." I'll take it. Marsha Ambrosius and Shirley Caesar also perform tributes.
10:39 - Patti LaBelle speaks! "Fifty years and I am still counting," she says. "Thank God that I'm still standing." She also sings some hits, including "Lady Marmalade."
10:57 - AWKWARD MOMENT! While presenting the viewers' choice award, the presenters accidentally announce Chris Brown as the winner for "Look at Me Now." Um, turns out the real winner is Rihanna/Drake for "What's My Name?" Wow. Drake accepts the award. Awkward.
10:59 - The annual "in memory" segment includes a performance of "Regulators." RIP, Nate Dogg.
11:10 - DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne perform "I'm On One."
11:16 - Beyonce performs! It's video footage from her concert in England. She sings "Best Thing I Never Had" followed by "End of Time."
11:26 - Host Kevin Hart clears up the confusion regarding the viewers' choice award. Turns out Chris Brown is the real winner after all. He also won the fandemonium award.

Michelle Obama meets with Mandela in South Africa

First lady Michelle Obama met with former South African President Nelson Mandela on Tuesday as part of a weeklong visit to the continent, according to a spokeswoman for the first lady.
Accompanying her on her visit with Mandela were a nephew, Avery Robinson, 19, and a niece, Leslie Robinson, 15, children of Obama's brother, Craig Robinson, according to Semonti Stephens, deputy communications director for the first lady.
Obama also was expected to visit other luminaries in the country Tuesday after arriving in Pretoria Monday night.
The first lady's trip highlights the value of South Africa as a viable partner with the United States in issues other than politics, said John Campbell, who holds the Ralph Bunche chair in African Policy Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.
"What is significant about the trip is that it underscores the fact that South Africa, since the establishment of nonracial (politics) has had a string of credible elections, is a country characterized by the rule of law, and is a democracy," Campbell said. "Twenty-five years ago I think relatively few of us would have predicted such a happy outcome."
Obama is scheduled to visit several historical sites, including Robben Island, where Mandela was held for much of his 27-year imprisonment in his fight against apartheid.
Obama, traveling on what officials have said is her second solo official visit to the continent, has brought her daughters, Sasha and Malia, and her mother in addition to her niece and a nephew.
"One of the things bringing them along demonstrates is the closeness of the Obama family," Campbell said. "And this is something that the people of Africa respond very well to. Certainly before her, Laura Bush made a number of trips to Africa as well and was very well received."

The visit will further raise the profile on the continent of the first lady and the president, whom many Africans regard as a favorite son.
"The Obamas as a couple are extremely popular in Africa and obviously 100% well-known there," Steve Howard, director of African studies at Ohio University, said Tuesday. "Her husband can't spend that much time there so they are dividing the labor, and she is representing them in South Africa, which is a major media market as well."
Howard said Michelle Obama's visit especially will resonate with the nation's youth.
"It has an enormous young population, probably more than 60% of the population is under 18," Howard said, "and they have a lot of health-related issues, particularly AIDS, and so everything she does there will help bring attention to global health issues."
She is also expected to visit Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu as well as Soweto, just outside Johannesburg.
In addition to visits with top leaders, Obama will be a distinguished guest at several public events, meet embassy officials and take part in community service projects in both South Africa and Botswana.
"The trip is a continuation of Mrs. Obama's work to engage young people, especially girls and young women, at home and abroad," the White House said.
Her visit to neighboring Botswana on Friday will include attending a tribute to girls overcoming obstacles as well as a luncheon with women leaders.
She will also meet with President Ian Khama before retreating to a local game reserve for the weekend. After a safari, she is scheduled to depart from the Botswana capital of Gaborone on Sunday.

STEVIE WONDER INDUCTED INTO APOLLO HALL OF FAME

At the Apollo Theater's 2011 Spring Gala Benefit in New York City June 13, 2011
Stevland Hardaway Morris (previously Judkins; born May 13, 1950), better known by his stage name Stevie Wonder, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and activist.
Blind since shortly after birth, Wonder signed with Motown Records' Tamla label at the age of eleven, and continues to perform and record for Motown to this day.
Among Wonder's best known works are singles such as "Superstition", "Sir Duke", "I Wish" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You". Well known albums also include Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life.
He has recorded more than thirty U.S. top ten hits and received twenty-two Grammy Awards, the most ever awarded to a male solo artist. Wonder is also noted for his work as an activist for political causes, including his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a holiday in the United States. In 2009, Wonder was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists to celebrate the US singles chart's fiftieth anniversary, with Wonder at number five.

The first time Stevie Wonder performed at the Apollo, he was just a child, and he remembers being so nervous, he dropped his bongos on the stage floor.
Wonder had no such butterflies Monday night as he was honored during the famed theater's spring gala with induction into the Legends Hall of Fame, which includes Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown.
Though Wonder was the main attraction, the audience was also wowed as he collaborated with a cast of friends and admirers including Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Paul Shaffer and Doug E. Fresh.
“It's a moment to cherish and remember, relishing in the memories of the times that I've been at the Apollo, as well as this night, the great people that came out to support me being here,” Wonder said in an interview. “It's a great thing to be one of those people in the Hall of Fame for the Apollo.”

Bennett presented the honor to Wonder, who in turn lauded the legendary crooner for his commitment to the Apollo and to civil-rights causes.
“As much as I may never see the color of his skin, I'm able to feel the color of his spirit,” Wonder told the audience. “When it was not fashionable to hang out with the brothers and sisters, you did.”
He then recalled Bennett singing one of Wonder's signature songs .“For Once in My Life” As Wonder began to sing the tune, Bennett joined in for an impromptu performance that ended with a standing ovation. It was one of several during a concert that featured Raphael Saadiq, gospel singers Yolanda Adams and Kim Burrell, Melanie Fiona, ?uestlove, Corea and others.
Beatboxer Fresh joined Wonder on an unusual and riveting performance of Wonder's classic “All I Do,” while Wonder played the harmonica as Corea led on piano during a rendition of Wonder's “Pastime Paradise.”
Wonder also sang some of his other classics as well as a Barbra Streisand cover, “People.”

Wonder, 61, has been making hits for five decades, getting his start as a child prodigy and then evolving into one of the most lauded and respected artists in music.

He's also an activist, leading fights against racism and other social problems. He was one of the integral figures in getting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday recognized as a national holiday.
Wonder didn't forget his political side during his acceptance speech, calling for better health care and criticizing those who fail to help others.
When asked about his comments, he later joked: “I just did it, I wasn't even thinking about it. It was on my mind. I kind of did the Kanye (West) and expressed myself.
But he lamented the divisiveness in much of the country and was critical of the media for focusing on things that he considered trivial, and distracting from larger issues.
“This is happening too frequently, too much, things that have nothing to do with the real issue. As opposed to talking about global warming and what's happening to our oceans and what's happening to the changes in the weather, they want to talk about what's happening under somebody's clothes, and to me it's just silly,” he said. “I just think that people need to focus on what is really important to the people.”

Apollo spring gala raised over $1.2 million. The funds will be used for its educational programs and to preserve the historic theater's legacy, organizers said.

50 Cent to release a book about bullies titled 'Playground' in 2012

50 Cent, the American rapper best known for his hits 'In Da Club' and 'Candy Shop', is penning a novel inspired by his childhood experiences with bullying. After signing a deal with Penguin's Young Reader Group, 50 Cent will release 'Playground' in 2012, hoping it will have "a positive influence on all teenagers", reports the UK's Guardian newspaper.
And unlike his previous literary efforts which have focused on his life story and the rules of power.  This time the book he is writing is focused on a teen audience adding semi-autobiographical novel about bullying.  The first person novel is slated for release in January 2012 and tells the story of a 13 year old schoolyard bully who finds redemption after coming to release what he has done
Despite 'Playground' being the rapper's debut as a novelist, he has published writing on two other occasions. He released the memoir 'From Pieces to Weight' in 2005 and penned the self-help book 'The 50th Law' four years later. 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, said "I had a strong desire to write 'Playground' because I wanted to explore how a kid becomes a bully". The book is inspired by the rapper's "own childhood and adolescence" and he hopes it will be of use to his teenage son. In response to his alleged 'bullying' of other artists such as Ja Rule, Rick Ross and Fat Joe, the rapper said, "A bully picks on people he knows he can beat. The people that I've been in altercations with will tear into (my) ass if (I) say something to them. How can I be a bully if I'm not picking weak individuals?".
50 Cent is currently working on his fifth studio album, which is reportedly scheduled for release in November 2011....but what do you think of all this?  Will you read the book? Dunno?

JA RULE's FAMILY......BROKE?

According to TMZ, Ja Rule’s wife, Aisha, is clearing up any misinformation regarding the rapper’s financial situation. His lady explained that before he began his prison sentence, “he did leave us well off.

All of the rumors about Ja Rule being broke are far from true. She added that her children are secure as far as income goes. He planned well before he went in.

He was determined to make the most of his last remaining hours of freedom, so he took his loved ones to see X-Men: First Class and later visited the studio, where he put the finishing touches on his upcoming album Pain is Love 2 (Pil 2).
In a post on his Twitter.com page, he wrote, "My last day out," before posting video footage of himself thanking loyal fans for their support.
He says, "This is my last day. I'm out. Tomorrow they take me to jail, tomorrow... Much love to the fans. I love y'all. Thanks for holding me down throughout the years, through this whole situation I'm going through. Be home real soon."
Ja will spend the next two years inside a New York prison for being convicted of weapons possession.

The Sentence Story

Jeffrey Atkins popularly known as Ja Rule headed to prison for up to two years in a gun case, bidding a stoic but upbeat farewell-for-now to family and fans at a New York courthouse.
The multi-platinum-selling rapper and actor — whose gravelly voice, thuggish tough talk and duets with R&B divas made him one of rap's stars in the early 2000s — signed autographs for fans on his way to be sentenced. He pleaded guilty in December to attempted criminal weapon possession; the case stemmed from gun found in his luxury sports car in July 2007.
"See y'all later," he told family and friends in the courtroom audience as he was handcuffed.
"Love you!" called the group, which included his wife, Aisha, and his mother and mother-in-law.
Dressed in a white T-shirt, gray pants and a gray hooded sweat shirt, he replied, "Love you, too."
With that, Ja Rule, 35, was led away to start serving his sentence. He'll briefly be in a city jail before heading to a state prison yet to be determined.
He also faces the possibility of a federal prison sentence for failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million in income; he pleaded guilty to that in March. He faces up to three years in prison in that case, though his will push for any prison time in that case to be served at the same time as his New York term.
His sentencing in the tax case has been set for Monday. But it will likely be postponed to later in the summer, said his lawyer, Stacey Richman.
In the meantime, Ja Rule heads to prison with an album on the way and, he has said, plans to write and otherwise keep busy behind bars.
"Out on my patio having my last free moment," he tweeted before heading to court.
"I love all my fans," he added. "Pain is love!!!"

Ja Rule emerged as a hardcore rapper in the late 1990s but then became known for his collaborations with female pop singers, including Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti. He scored a best rap album Grammy Award nomination in 2002 with "Pain Is Love" and has sold nearly 20 million albums during his career.
He also has appeared in more than a dozen movies, including the 2001 film "The Fast and the Furious" and 2003's "Scary Movie 3."
He now is also the latest in a long line of prominent rappers to do time. The list includes Lil Wayne, who was arrested separately on a gun charge the same night as Ja Rule after a show they both played at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre. Lil Wayne also pleaded guilty to attempted criminal weapon possession and spent about eight months of last year in a city jail.
Police said they stopped Ja Rule's $250,000-plus Maybach sports car for speeding and found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in a rear door. The gun wasn't registered, and he was charged under a New York law that generally bars people from having firearms outside their homes or workplaces.
"He stood up and took responsibility for everything," Richman said.
Ja Rule said Monday on Fox 5's "Good Day New York" that "I try not to regret anything I do in life, because you go through life and you do things, and you man up to them."
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the rapper's sentence "should put all illegal gun owners in New York on notice."
Ja Rule's road manager and uncle, Dennis Cherry, and the artist's driver, Mohamed Gamal, were arrested with him. Gamal died before his case was resolved. Cherry's was closed without jail time after he met various conditions.
Originally from Queens, Ja Rule now lives in Upper Saddle River, N.J., with his wife — whom he has known since high school — and children, 15, 11 and 9.
He spent the final days before his prison term putting finishing touches on his next album, "Pain Is Love 2," expected out in late July or early August, manager Ron Robinson said.
"Toward the end, he had new songs that he was passionate about," the manager said. Thinking about his impending prison term "turned up a lot of feelings for him."
Ja Rule had some previous brushes with the law, including pleading guilty to assault for punching someone at a Toronto nightclub in 2004. He was fined $1,200. He said he was provoked by a crowd shouting derogatory remarks about his feud with rapper 50 Cent, who had derided him in songs and interviews.
Ja Rule recently told TMZ.com he plans to keep busy behind bars by writing a book, getting his GED and possibly taking up the guitar.
"I'm gonna try to make good of my time while I'm inside," he said.
Ja Rule might be able to get out in as little as 18 months by meeting requirements for good behavior and other standards.
"See you in 18," he told reporters and fans on his way into court. "One love."

MO-HITS PRESS CONFERENCE @ KOKO LOUNGE, E CENTRE YABA LAGOS

History is always in the offing and with it success stories. Today 16th June 2011 at the prestigious Koko Lounge in E Centre Yaba, Lagos, a historical success story played out. It was the press conference of Nigeria’s number one entertainment musical label Mo Hits Records.

Synonymous with the African time syndrome the press conference which was organized by veteran reporter Mr. Ogbonna Amadi of Vanguard Newspapers and Mr Sunday Areh C.E.O of List Entertainment (the management outfit handling the affairs of Mo Hits Records) which was meant to start by 11:00am started an hour late but all present waited as it has never been in the habit of the label to keep its numerous lovers waiting.

First to emerge were Black Diamond of Mo Hits Wande Coal and Lady's man D’Prince (Omoba) followed by Dr SID and then when his presence was felt it was awesome. Thus entered Nigeria’s finest and number one artiste Mr. Endowed Koko Master D’Banj looking all fresh and smooth in his traditional humble and jovial self. He went round and shook the hands of all present and personally apologizing for keeping them waiting. Taking his sit among his colleagues in the label he still greeted them and one would wonder at such meekness….”ehennnn”. He still apologized once again for being late. Then enters the Africa’s best producer Don Jazzy in his casual and often shy demeanor followed by other members of the Mohitian clan viz : Jay Mohits, Sesan (Mohits official video director), Mr. Bizzle Osukoya, Mr. Sunny Areh, Mr. Abbey Nana, Mr. Wale, Spice etc.
The conference went into full swing. Here are some salient highlights of the press conference.

G.O.O.D Music / Mo Hits Records

* D’Banj and Don Jazzy are not relocating to United States of America rather they would be shuttling between Nigeria and U.S.A but more of U.S working on his forthcoming album which would feature G.O.O.D Music artiste Kid Cudi, 2face Idibia, Wande Coal etc
* Like the saying that you cannot relocate the captain of a ship and abandon his crew, the contract is between the two labels MoHits and G.O.O.D Music.
* The negotiations for the deal started since November 2010 and was concluded on 8th June 2011 (Kanye West birthday)
* MoHits part of the deal is up to the sum of $3, 000, 000 (three million dollars) which they have provided

While fielding questions from all present, Mr Endowed D’Banj pledged not to relent in his support of the fight against piracy but went on to reiterate that he does not believe there is piracy as in his words “In Nigeria there is no piracy cos it’s the availability of the original that makes piracy thrive so without the original no piracy (laughs)”
He also told all gathered of the opening soon of another Koko Lounge on the island (Victoria Island, Lagos).

Don Jazzy also taking questions concerning any plans of signing a new act to the MoHits label said he had considered signing the First Lady of MoHits from the next Koko Mansion season 2 (Watch Out). He (Don Baba J) also debunked the numerous track list circulating on the internet about Knaye West forth coming album and said he is not yet certain any of his works or D’Banj would be on Kanye West album.
