Hunger Games: Catching Fire made box office history
this weekend, becoming the biggest November opening in history with $161.1
million in North American ticket sales, and a whopping $307.7 million globally.
The second film in the franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Lenny Kravitz,
Jeffrey Wright and others, easily outpaced the first film's $218 million debut.
The film is now the fourth-biggest opening of all
time after The Avengers ($207.4 million), Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million) and the
final Harry Potter film ($169.2 million).
Thor 2: The Dark World came in second place, adding
$14.1 to its take and bringing the film's worldwide total to $548.8 million.
The Best Man Holiday placed third, grossing $12.5 million and bringing its
domestic total to a hearty $50.4 million.
Vince Vaughn has less to smile about this week. His
film Delivery Man scored the lowest numbers of his career with a paltry $8.2
million.
Next week, anticipated films like “Black Nativity”, “Mandela:
Long Walk to Freedom” and Spike Lee's “Oldboy” will pack the box office. With
Hunger Games nearly guaranteed to keep the top slot, which one is a contender
for second place?
